The Future of Food in Sacramento

30 Jan

Gratitude to the City & County of Sacramento & surrounding areas.

As of January 2015 there are only 3 gluten free shops available on the west coast (7 have closed their doors).

Gluten Free Specialty – Sacramento, CA – celebrating its 7th year
Gaia’s Basket – Auburn, CA – celebrating its 2nd year
Bite Orange Market – Costa Mesa, CA – celebrating its 4th year

We have faith that the Gluten Free Specialty Grocery will make it it to the decade mark, but we need your help.

We need your help to spread the word about our funding campaign for Roots Creative Kitchen. It will launch 2/17 until 4/17 of 2015, REALLY SOON and we need as much support in spreading the word as we can get. The entire campaign will be spread by word of mouth, so we’re depending on the community to make this project happen.

Roots Creative Kitchen aka is a NEW & INNOVATIVE project based on our Melanie’s dream to make safe, healthy and affordable foods available to the community. Since 2008, when Gluten Free Specialty Grocery opened, our community has asked over and over again for fresh and healthy quick grab breakfast, lunch & dinner options alongside fresh breads and grocery items. Roots Creative Kitchen fills this need, but we need your help to make it happen.

Plans are being made for the kitchen & cafe to be at 26th & J Street, but whether or not this can happen is dependent on 2 obstacles:

1) Funding: Initial funding required is $50,000 to $20,0000 which sounds like a lot, but it only takes 2000 residents donating $25 dollars each to make the project happen.

2) Location: Roots Creative Kitchen is set to open at the same location as Gluten Free Specialty, but circumstances might require a location shift. Melanie will do her best to continue to serve the community at 26th & J Street and has a good track record.

4) The Future of GFS in Sacramento: Melanie is hoping to create a new business model in 2015 that will serve the Midtown community in NEW and INNOVATIVE WAYS. Her dream model includes both a Gluten Free Grocery Store and Roots Kitchen & Cafe at 26th and J Street. Imagine if you could walk in and sit down at a table for a quick bite to eat with coffee, espresso, tea or kombucha and then grab a few grocery items, bulk spices, flours, grains, produce and other items to stock up your pantry at home. Melanie believes that the new model will serve the Midtown community and gluten free community alike and will be community based and cooperatively run model that unites local farms, local food producers and local midtowners.

What you can do to help:

1.) Write us a note, letter or email describing what the cafe & kitchen would mean to you.

Example: I’m a celiac and having a place I can eat or grocery shop at safely is exciting.

2.) Endorse our project on social media:

Wordpress, Blogger, Facebook, Twitter, Email, Instagram, Pinterest, Yelp, Foursquare, Vimeo, YouTube, Forums

Roots Creative Kitchen: A new kitchen, cafe & delivery service

Imagine, a celiac safe kitchen in Midtown! That’s what I’m aiming to create for you. Bulk options, café seating, creative inspiration and classes.

Our Indie Go Go campaign to make this happen

During the holiday season, we will be posting recipes, holiday ideas and information about the funding launch. Please help us to get the word out by sharing recipes and ideas to your family and friends.

We are using the concept of ‘hito’ to make it happen. A community of ‘hito’ leans on each other in a balanced way to make big things happen. So far we have more than 60 community members volunteering services and more than 60 community members on our national outreach team to spread the word.

If you’d like to participate, send us an email at

If you haven’t heard about crowd funding, you’re not alone. It’s a way of funding business and project ideas and is a relatively new concept, so I’ve added a couple FAQ’s .
