Happy 6th Birthday Adventures! Don’t Miss Out!

12 Jul

In just 5 days… Our store turns 6!

Last year… we had hundreds of people visit during our birthday week to celebrate with us.

This year… we’re celebrating for 4 weeks on the web… followed by an informal community potluck celebration!

You’ve met our team:

Melanie Weir – opened Gluten Free Specialty in 2008 against the recommendations of grocery specialist and business specialists, without grocery experience, to make SAFE gluten free food more available in the Sacramento area.

This is the first day & first sale at the Gluten Free Specialty Grocery Store – July 16th 2008

Before our year 5 Anniversary Celebration

April Hewlett – began working at Gluten Free Specialty in early 2012 and is currently transitioning from co-managing to managing our community store.

Melanie Marshall – began working at Gluten Free Specialty in 2011 and has worked part-time when she’s not travelling and working in theater.

This lovely team is working on a new project, a Midtown Collective Cafe.

When Gluten Free Specialty started as a Grocery Store, we had no financial plan. Just a dream and a lovely community of support.

We began our first day of GFS with 12 sales and in the early days, a 12 hour day resulted in $25 to $125 in sales. Which barely paid our expenses in our (at the time) 750 Square Foot Space.

Now, we have 2,400 Square Feet of shopping space and 1,5000 Square Feet of potential and we need your help.

In our 7th year, we are gathering volunteers, investors and community support to complete a new project.

The new project will include:

a Gluten Free Community Collective Cafe
Indoor and Outdoor Seating for customers
Library & Reading Area
Gluten Free Education Outreach & Support (for families, individuals, restaurants & health providers)
Gluten Free Cooking Education Courses (with local and visiting chefs & bakers)
Bulk Food ordering options (to help safe money)
Web ordering for online access to gluten free foods (eventually this will include categorization of multiple allergens)
Delivery options in Midtown (by bicycle) and other local areas.
The First Step

Before we jump into a project that is going to take investment to happen, we want to know how interested our community is in supporting our idea.

For our birthday this year, we are asking for your help. Next week, we will be sending out a newsletter that will include information on our first ever funding campaign.

The full project is going to take more work, time and effort, but our initial campaign is going to test the waters and see whether we should continue forward in our design plans and to see whether we are providing what our community wants.

Campaign – Happy Birthday Gluten Free Specialty
will provide our community with

Table & Chairs (for eating)
Bookshelves & Books for reading
A Sign for Outside (so the community knows where we are)
Shelves for displaying products (so we don’t have to stack boxes on the floor)
A sitting area for reading
Computer access for Customers to learn more about the gluten free diet
The campaign will begin NEXT WEEK and go for 4 weeks and we need your help!

What you can do!
Tell your friends
Tell your family
Tell the media (news, magazines, city of sacramento)
Tell related businesses
Tell your doctor, nutritionist or medical provider
Tell anyone you think might be interested in having this service available in Sacramento.
For our 6th birthday, we would like to ask for a little bit of your time! If you have money you want to donate to our project, please do, but your time is just as valuable, if not more! We know times are hard and every little bit of help we receive in the weeks ahead will be appreciated.

If you’ve read to the end of this newsletter. Then you are awesome! Thanks for keeping updated and being a part of our community.

We would not be able to exist without you!

In the words of our Italian Celiac friends…. Grazie!
