FDA Gluten Free Law Update:

We’ve been reading up on the FDA specifications on the new gluten free label. You can read a copy on our bulletin board or pull up the information yourself here:

Highlights include:
1. The law goes into place in 30 days
2. Gluten free products cannot contain gluten grains (though they can contain gluten containing grasses… which is bad)
3. Food will be regulated at 20ppm (research shows 3-5ppm would be a better)
4. Manufacturers have 12 months to comply to the regulations
5. Only food and dietary supplements will be regulated (alcohol & meat containing products including pizza… could remain un-regulated).

Event Updates:This weekend in Sacramento – Sunday

Amy Burkhart, “The Celiac MD,” will speak at an informal gathering of northern California celiacs on Sunday, August 18, 2013, 1:30 pm, at St. Marks United Methodist Church, 2391 St. Marks Way, Sacramento, CA 95864.  Dr. Burkhart’s topic will be “SIBO (Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth) – What does it mean to those with Gluten Sensitivity or Celiac Disease?”, followed by a Q and A session. Donations to cover facility costs are appreciated (suggested donation $5).  Experienced celiacs (only) also are asked to bring a gluten-free snack/treat to share, together with ingredient and allergen information.  No childcare.  RSVP is **required**, so please leave RSVP voicemail at 916-483-8546 by 8/12/13.
